En las listas de mejores filmes de todos los tiempos, salvo buena parte de las elaboradas en Estados Unidos, suele haber bastantes coincidencias. Por ejemplo, en casi todas ellas y en un lugar preeminente aparecen el Ciudadano Kane wellesiano, las Reglas del juego, de Renoir, y algún filme japonés, bien sea Los cuentos de Tokio, de Ozu, El intendente Sansho, de Mizoguchi, o Los siete samuráis, de Kurosawa. Otro indiscutible de las listas es el germano Murnau, que puede figurar indistintamente con cualquiera de sus grandes obras: Amanecer, Nosferatu o El último (The Last Laugh). Después están, combinados con distinta suerte, algunos de los grandes realizadores de la historia del cine: Ford, Eisenstein, Hitchcock, Fellini, Donen, Kubrick, Jean Vigo, Lang, Bresson, Bergman, Dreyer, Rossellini, Coppola...
Cualquiera de las listas que se incluyen a continuación tiene sin embargo un efecto perverso: la contemplación de esas obras magníficas, que resisten impertérritas el paso de los años y de las modas, la evolución de los esquemas morales y el cambio de los valores estéticos y sociales, tal vez invita a pensar que ya no se hacen películas como aquellas, lo cual es cierto (sería impensable rodar hoy el Amanecer de Murnau o El maquinista de la General, de Keaton) pero no necesariamente negativo. El cine del siglo XXI no será peor que el del XX, ni diferirá mucho en los aspectos técnicos esenciales (el primer plano, la iluminación, la elipsis...) o las grandes cuestiones éticas. A fin de cuentas el cine no es nada más que una historia, un punto de vista y una cámara; el resto, la tecnología, es accesorio.
